We need beauty because it makes us ache to be worthy of it.
~ Mary Oliver
I have taken the month of July to reboot, to visit with old friends, and to spend more time in nature. Mary Oliver’s words ring true for me. We need beauty because it makes us ache to be worthy of it. I still find myself in awe, all the time, at the beauty that surrounds us here in the White Mountains. I’ve hiked, swam, and kayaked in my time off. I’ve slept in and ate out. I’ve even spent two nights on Star
Island. It was a good few weeks.
And now, I long to pick up the good work I set down in June. I look forward to returning to my office and our community at Starr King UU Fellowship this month and to the pulpit in September. Please know that this means that I am happily available again to visit, to chat about what holds meaning for you, to discuss concerns, and possibilities. Don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to connect.
This month, I’ll be meeting with our Religious Education director Jane Clay, to work on the details of our religious education plans for the coming year. Music Director, Sarah Dan Jones, and I will be planning music and worship together after she gets back from the UU Musician’s Network annual conference. I know we will all benefit from the insights she gains from her experience there. Office administrator, Lisa Olech, and I will be reconnecting to keep the lights on and the place running. She does this so well for us even as we slow down in the summer. Please know how very much I appreciate our paid staff and look forward to our shared work together, once again.
This month I will also be meeting with Deedie Kriebel, our board president, committee chairs, and Soul Matters facilitators to prepare for our new fellowship year. I am both excited and grateful to begin again with such capable and committed volunteers.
We might find beauty in nature, in community, in time off and in time together and we are worthy of it. I am happy to be reminded of that truth and look forward to returning to the fellowship. It is my sincere hope that you too have found beauty this summer, for we are indeed in need of fortifying ourselves to serve a planet very much in need of our compassion and determination to build a healthier, more just
In faith and love,
