Introducing Linda Barnes, our third settled Minister
It is with great joy that we announce the members of the Fellowship voted unanimously to call the Reverend Dr. Linda Barnes as our new Minister. She has moved here from Iowa with her son Martin and husband Mark.
Please read her warm, introductory letter to us.
There are so many reasons why Linda is a good fit for Starr King.
She and her husband, Mark, believe strongly in ecological awareness. In 2012 Linda traveled to Washington DC to be honored as a White House Champion of Change for Rural America. She lobbied for OXFAM and has given many talks on the importance of maintaining small, rural farms.
We wanted someone with an “intellectual and scientific track record”. Linda received a Ph.D in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology in 1994 and has taught at the college level for many years.
We were hoping for someone who would help us increase our membership. This past year Linda has served as the Membership Coordinator at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines, Iowa, a congregation of over 500 members!
Many of us were concerned about the theology of our new minister. Linda calls herself a “religious naturalist”. she says, “In my personal theology, sin is falling short of being in right relationship. It is the failure to engage with the wider world.”
