The celebration of Santa Lucia has its origins in Scandinavia, although it celebrates an Italian girl who was a martyr at Roman hands. At the darkest time of year, this celebration marks the coming of new light. In homes with children, on December 13th early in the morning, the eldest daughter dons a headband wreath of pine and candles, and delivers cookies and hot chocolate to each member of the family. Cookies with cardamon are the most authentic ones, although any will do.
